That and, on the server side, scalable high-performance computing.  IRIX
running on a system as large as an Origin 2800 is a single-image operating
system, not a cluster OS.

I'm not a representative sample by any stretch, but I personally used IRIX
as a development environment almost exclusively from 1996 through 2004.  I
found much more comfortable (and responsive) to work in than Solaris,
where one could watch windows slooooowly think about repainting
themselves, even on Creator-series graphics hardware.  I'd have
recommended it at the time to anyone who lucked into some discarded SGI
hardware.

I did like maintaining Solaris as a multiuser server environment a lot
better, though.
