Packing peanuts can be a good substitue for the original packing foam, when
done properly. Two keys. First shake/vibrate the box to "settle" the
packing peanuts as you filll the base, and around the unit. second when
you get to to the top make sure you put a little bit more in and leave a bit
of a crown to the box. This ensures as settling / crushing of the peanuts
occur the item stays in the middle of the peanuts and box, otherwise,
vibration and etc will force the item to one side of the box making it
extremely prone to damage. shippers don't like to pay out on "high value"
items either, i had a claim denied on a brand new APC 3kva 3u ups. they
said they weren't going to pay due to it not being in the manufacturers box,
which it was but severly destroyed.
