DAT was digital so copying from DAT to harddrive via the Archive drives
was an all digital process and lossless.

Not if you felt a need for the computer anyway for editing purposes.
Sure, you can do alot with cutting tape, but that is going to be a lot
harder than using a digital audio workstation.  And then there might
have been users trying to move audio from a Protools system to say a
Irix based editing/finishing system.
