Does the system in question do both metadata and data journaling?  The
latter will generate a higher write load.

I think Sun might provide a way to do this. I know they issue Seagate
firmware updates for various servers.  The only thing I could find
quickly was for drives connected to Infiniband, but if you look deeper
you might find something for SCSI.

Also, if you visit the drive OEM's website, you might find tools to
diagnose, repair, and update their drives.

The tools often require an MS-DOS boot disk and a PC, but I've used them
to burn upgrades before even for Sun drives.

I feel like the process is awfully fragile though, so try first on a
drive you can afford to lose.
