OK more info... Ubuntu 6.06LTS "dapper" on an E250 is a wee bit broken.

I'm running spot's distro, Aurora 2.0 now. Much more better!

target0:0:0: FAST-20 WIDE SCSI 40.0 MB/s ST (50 ns, offset 16)
-vs-
target0:0:0: FAST-20 SCSI 20.0 MB/s ST (50 ns, offset 16)

Old performance:
  Timing O_DIRECT cached reads: 920 MB in 2.00 seconds = 459.97 MB/sec
  Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 50 MB in 3.00 seconds = 16.64 MB/sec

New performance:
  Timing O_DIRECT cached reads: 896 MB in 2.00 seconds = 448.87 MB/sec
  Timing O_DIRECT disk reads: 88 MB in 3.03 seconds = 29.02 MB/sec
