Why not set the EEPROM values to force the resolution (or are you only 
speaking of X Windows settings)?

On my systems with non-13W3 framebuffers (PGX-24, Raptor GFX) I set the 
output device to something like:

screen:1024x768r70

(From memory - please don't use the above without verifying it is 
appropriate for your framebuffer)
