I think the real danger is with end-of-charge detection. NiCd chargers
most usually use negative delta-V as a means of detecting an end-of-charge
condition.

When charging a NiMH battery there is no negative delta-V (well, actually
there is, but it's on the order of microvolts IIRC) and so a NiCd charger
will tend to just carry on, eventually overheating the battery and
possibly causing it to burst into flames/explode.

Proper NiMH chargers use zero delta-V as a means of detecting
end-of-charge.
