CF is almost but not entirely unlike "plain" flash memory. There is a
layer of abstraction/indirection that keeps you from the bare metal,
but in theory makes the card last longer due to an internal
wear-levelling algorithm.

Built-in intelligence and wear-levelling is probably just as well,
given that most devices that use it (e.g. Windows boxen) are as dumb
as a sack of bricks and use FAT for the "filesystem".
