Did you check the battery backed up clock/ram chip? (aka NVRAM) If the
battery died, or it got scrambled, your ethernet (MAC) address becomes
0xffffffff. At that point you will send out packets, but no one will
listen.

Note that the MAC address is not the same as the IP address.
