They require so much CPU hand-holding to do their job that they'll drive
up your load average just streaming traffic.  They're much better
interrupt-generators than communications peripherals.

Also, while I don't have the datasheet immediately in front of me, I
seem to recall something about them that makes them fundamentally ill-
suited for operation on a PCI bus; they require an unreasonably large
number of transactions just for basic operations.  They work much better
on isolated buses, like you'd find in an embedded environment.
