[rescue] New(old) scanner

Can't help with the SCSI bit, however if you install SANE and GIMP on
the machine, you can export the display and use it remotely that way.
Have a UMAX 1200 SCSI on a Linux/BSD box at home and it was literally
plug-and-play as far as setup went... who know Linux could be user
friendly? :)
