RH9 is apparently 2.2, which is still pretty old.

Given enough effort anything is possible :)

The easy way out is to go the pkg-get route (http://blastwave.org). I
took a quick look at compiling it with gcc and it looks possible
providing you avoid the XRENDER stuff. As to Sun's compiler, I've no
idea.
