In defense of the average Joe, this is as much the fault of the
industry.

General Electric doesn't sell steam turbine power generators in
Wal-Mart, and provides proper training and documentation for their
product, and makes sure the customer knows what he is getting.

By contrast computers and a lot of other consumer products are sold
with no training, no or very bad documentation, and they make sure the
customer knows as little as possible about what they are getting, to the
point of actively lying to them about it.
