I can guess why this came about.  Some previous versions of windoze
where the default behavior was not to display extensions of known
file types would hide the trailing extension and show the icon
associated with the other extension.  IE, if I sent you somefile.jpg.exe,
you would see somefile.jpg with the icon for your .jpg viewer.  It
would look just like a safe .jpg file, but if you launched on it, it
would run as an executable.

Pretty damned funny the first time I saw one.  I wondered why
somefile.jpg.exe had an $IMAGEVIEWER icon and started experimenting.

I guess .tgz is your friend here.  Isn't this sort of why it
exists?  So it will fit the old windoze namespace?
