You can get 360Mhz processors for that system, and it'll provide
some significant speed increase.  These are fairly plentiful, and not
that expensive - even for a whole new system, especially if you can make
use of some of the existing peripherals as needed.  I suspect that this
is likely to fall right in line with your price range.

I see that SGI has an Onyx2 2xR12k-400Mhz for about USD12,500 - but
that's a pretty damn big stick just to compile code.

I think, to stay on the "upgrade path" beyond the Origin200, you're
likely going to have to go to a Origin 2000.  An Origin 2100 deskside
would be pretty darn nice - but expensive.

Just FWIW: Origin200s are dropping in price so far that they're now
*very* close to being within the budget of hobbyists.  Parts and
upgrades for them are plentiful and cheap - at least in the US.
