There is that problem.  Which is why I did mine only as a one-off proof
of concept.

That said, I've always thought that having "the rule" be a count of
lines rather than characters is pretty damn silly.  I mean, I could have
a ten-line .sig consisting of twenty characters including newlines, or I
could have a four-line .sig containing over 300 characters.

(Not that the four-line rule-of-thumb is much needed nowadays anyway. 
It arguably made sense in the age of 2400-baud modems.  It really
doesn't in the age of DSL and cable modems.)
