Yes, it appears the dvd and other multimedia stuff uses Altivec. 
I'm still not completely convinced it will make a huge (read: $300)
difference to me as a casual user, or that it will benefit more than
I would gain from a 900mhz G3 upgrade. But it does appear that the
software benefits from the G4 side of things somewhat.
