I had one in a crowded machine room and it was lost against the sound
of the A/C and the rest of the equipment (particularly the routers).

That's hard to say. The T1 is listed as less than 65 dBA
operating. That's a measurement taken at three feet but doesn't take
into account the pitch of the noise but a 10 dB increase will sound
twice as loud. As a matter of comparison: A somewhat quiet PC power
supply will be in the 50 dBA range, a noisy one might be 70 dBA (Dell
anyone?), a residential street is around 55dBA and an urban
residential neighborhood is around 65 dBA. I can (and do) sleep to the
sound of noisier machines than that but then my neighborhood is
probably around that level. I find that the drive noise is much worse
than fan noise. The high pitched whining Seagate Barracuda is enough
to make me close the door (or replace the drive) where as the humming
of my SS5 doesn't.
