At the time, I was not confident of my ability adequately to secure a Unix
machine.  Plus, I had piles of spare Wintel machines with NT licenses, and
only one Sun box.

Before we had RoadRunner, and I was using dial-up, my router was a PC
running IPRoute, a DOS-based router.  It's both obscure and secure.  I'd
have used it for RR, but at the time it didn't support DHCP on an Ethernet
connection.
