I think HotJava had two purposes:

1) Proof-of-Concept - big applications could be written in Java, and

2) Provide a means to download Netscape ;^)

Painful doesn't begin to explain the experience - I tried it on an
SS/5-170 with an S24 framebuffer, and had no idea what I was in for...
