For many things, "newer" just means "cheaper to manufacture" ... and in many
cases "suitable for operation by less-intelligent people," too.

Compare, say, a turn-of-the-19th-century all-metal NCR cash-register with
the modern all-plastic punch-the-item-not-the-price things they use at
McDonalds.  Compare the skills neccessary to operate the former with those
evidenced by the operators of the latter.

Of course, you can't apply this generalization to the computer business ....
