Sigh.  2 UltraDMA something IDE Hard drives on channel 1, 1 PIO4 CD-ROM
on channel 2.    One harddrive is the boot drive, and the other is the
data drive.  I figured it would be best to use thedata drive on the same
channel as the boot drive rather than slow the data drive down to PIO4.
The machine has enough memory that it shouldn't need to ever use swap,
and so, the only time the boot drive should be used would be for reading
config files and writing logs.  Ideally that machine would have enough
channels for every drive to have it's own.  That won't happen without
more investment than I want to put into it (a new motherboard would be
required).  Alternatively, the CD-ROM would be on channel 1 with the
boot drive, and the data drive would be alone.  But, I don't have any
cables that will accomodate such a setup (the CD-ROM being on the far
side of the case from the boot drive).  I could buy a new IDE cable, but
it just seems to me that even with the attrocity of two drives on one
channel, that this should work faster.  hdparm shows that DMA is on for
both disks.
