   Stop thinking so "traditionally."  Lack of a 9-5 job doesn't mean 
lack of money.  I survived just fine for over a year (with SERIOUS 
expenses) between piecemeal consulting work (typically less than one 
day per week) and buying/selling between the gov't surplus market and 
eBay...which is particularly fun because I could keep the best stuff 
for myself. :)

   If I can do it, anyone can.
