I've actually known several 486 boxes that could boot from CD.  Granted 
they were slightly "later" boards but they did do it.

IIRC most Pentium 1 boards had the option but almost nobody ever 
enabled it.  Though I agree that there were quite a few that didn't 
have that ability.
