   The cable isn't *supposed* to have a twist in it.  That 
brain-deadness was started by IBM on the floppy interface to flip the 
device select bits around, so that they could have a big stock of 
floppy drives in the warehouse that were all jumpered the same.

   Sometimes that carried over into hard disk interfaces...just to flip 
the device select bits around.  Few systems other than PCs did crap 
like that.
