That's not a reasonable criticism of BSD. For one thing, the current
free BSDs are better than any of the commercial BSDs of the past
twenty years, so you're getting more than what people used to pay
an arm-and-a-leg for, for free. Beyond that, the BSDs are as good
as any other unix, on generic hardware. It's a matter of taste.
Adminning BSD is completely different than adminning any SysV
descendant. Some like one, some like the other.

On high-end hardware ("mainframe class" as it were), nothing
approaches Solaris, AIX, etc., etc. I don't think anyone would
argue about that.

If I had to pay money, I would pay more for OpenBSD than Solaris,
even without the source.
