[rescue] Interesting SPARC 10 problem

Ido:

You might want to try resetting the OBP values to their defaults via the OBP command
that I believe is 'set-defaults' but I don't remember it exactly at the moment. I
know I've had many machines that wouldn't boot properly, but after resetting the
nvram back to the factory defaults they worked fine. Also, there's really no reason
I can think of to manually set the input & output to ttya, if there's no keyboard
plugged in, it will use the serial port, but if there is, it will use the
keyboard/monitor. Do you have other CPUs for the machine? If so, do you get the same
results with them? I've already gone over to my local storage, and grabbed another
SM81, so just give me the word, and it'll be on it's way to you. (unlike many ebay
vendors, I try and stand behind what I sell.)

While we're picking each other's brains, I have a couple of Mac questions for you...

I bought a Tango card for my PM5500. Since I've installed it, as well as the Sonnet
patches, and Apple's USB & Firewire drivers the machine has become fairly unstable.
Before I put the card in, it would work fine, with an occasional crash now and then,
since putting the card in it crashes an average of once an hour or so. One thing
I've noticed is that the L2 cache simm while it's definitely seated, feels sort of
loose in the socket, is this something common on Macs? I also bought a 500mhz/1mb
cache Sonnet L2 G3 card for the machine which I'll probably get either today, or
tomorrow, will that tend to make the machine more stable, or less yet?

Also, I have an ADB keyboard from an old LCII (Apple Keyboard II) that I'm using on
the machine rather than the original keyboard (Appledesign keyboard) because it's
much smaller, and I don't have much room in front of the machine for the keyboard,
and this one fits better, but it doesn't have any function keys. Are function keys
ever used in MacOS, or were they there specifically for the DOS compatibility card?

It's amazing, the earlier keyboard is more than 10 years old, but yet has a nicer
feel to the keys than the newer one! (heck, it's almost as nice feeling as my
Northgate Omnikey!)
