Nope--the ST datasheet on the M48T02 is quite clear--there's a lithium
button cell _and_ a quartz crystal in the top section.  What I don't know
is whether or not the oscillator circuit will continue to sing without a
crystal in place.  If it does, your clock won't run right when you lose
power.  If it doesn't, you'll get the TOD (time of day?) warning at bootup.
