After all this talk - it turns out that I have 7.2 installed on my
system.  When attempting to apply the patch to bring it up to 7.3.x, it
fails exactly as yours did.

grumble....

I have no MIPSPro CDs either.  Unless there's something at the office,
which I doubt.
