Actually, you could put anything in the serial number field.
I had a couple of systems that I couldn't easily find the
serial number (without moving a bunch of stuff stacked on
the systems), so I just put dummy data in, and that worked.
I also had a couple of systems that didn't have a serial
number on them (built from PC164 boards), so I had to make
ones up for those, too.
