SGI supported a configuration with 36 CPUs in 1996, as per the periodic
table.

I think the thermal limit depends on the environment.  I probably couldn't
get an 4-CPU challenge to boot in my workroom (which is currently at 90
degrees Fahrenheit).  In a fairly chilled datacenter, with a decent rate
of air exchanges, I don't think there'd be a problem.
