When I was in high school it was common for some of the students
to have rifles or shotguns in their trucks, for hunting or killing
predators on farms.  Some students a knife in a sheath (allowed as
long as the knife had a folding blade).

One guy even brought an AR-15 to class once for speech class
(his speech was on proper cleaning techniques), and another
time a sabre in scabbard (a teacher was interested in taking
a look at it).  No one had any problem.

Today a SWAT team would probably take him out before he got
to his locker.
