well, after trying 2.4.17, 2.4.10, 2.4.8, 2.4.6, and 2.4.4, i got 2.4.2
to compile.  This was about 3 minutes ago. :) I don't know a damn thing
about kernel programming, so i wasn't about to try to fix anything, just
kept make oldconfig'ing and moved down the line until i got one to
compile. (this took a few days, it takes over 90 minues to compile a
kernel 'make dep clean vmlinux' on my ss5-85mhz, so i'd get one goin,
and come back a few hours later)
