I would highly recommend trying Gentoo Linux (http://www.gentoo.org).
It's not exactly in 1.0 yet, but it's close enough to be more than
usable for day-to-day desktop or server work. It uses "portage" for all
of it's packages - which is similar to the xBSD "ports" systems. The
portage system is rapidly eclipsing FreeBSD's ports system in features!
For "traditional" *nix people and especially xBSD people, Gentoo is
Linux done right. Still Linux, but a lot more livable :)
