Actually the PS2 has 2 MIPS processors, a R3000 for I/O and PS1 emulation
and a R5900-like processor (it uses a MIPS IV core with the emotion engine
extensions, MMX on drugs... which do not addere 100% to the MDMX SIMD
extensions proposed by MIPS a while back)
 
I think Sony just released the Linux/PS2 CD's for the American market...
