[rescue] root home directory under solaris-2.6

Does anyone know if there is a way to get Sol-2.6 to allow root's home directory to be other than / ? Having all of root's .files in / buggs me a bit and I would much perfer to have root's home directory be /root. I 'spose I could modify /etc/profile so that if $USER=root then set HOME=/root but I assume there is a beter way? vipw just has a fit about root's home-dir != / when i try and change it...
