Okay, bad wording.  The default, /usr/local.

I did look at it.  I pulled the test program out and compiled it
by hand.  When you run it, it doesn't find it.  I think this is because
they aren't telling it where to look for the libraries it found at
compile time...

Hmmm... I just realized I'm also doing this as root.  (I know, I know, but
I've been compiling away before I went and started my user setup process).
Doesn't this muck up the stored library path?
