Yes, eterm. Pardon my "xterm" reference. And yes, it can be done on the
BSD's, and Solaris, and anything else that runs X. I've seen three or
more packaged implementations of the root text thing, all of which are
basically forks of root-tail, which is available here:

It's definitely not Linux-centric.
