   If you only need 10baseT, I'd recommend the IBM 8271-108 (8 ports)
or -216 (16 ports). There are later models in the 8271 family, but they're
OEMed from 3Com and their front-panel lights aren't nearly as informative
or nice. However, you can get a -612 (12 @ 10baseT, 1 @ 100baseTX) or
a -712 (12 @ 10/100).

   All of these are frequently available on Ebay for reasonable prices.
They can all be managed over a simple text serial connection, no fancy
software required. Note that all of them have two or three fans and are
pretty loud, though.
