What you are describing is true for the Sparc 5 & 20. While the 4 used
the same case, they mounted the drive over the motherboard on a bracket
mounted on stand-offs. The drive connects to an 80 pin SCA connector on
the mb via a short SCA-SCA cable. It is possible to mount the SCA
backplane from an 5 or 20 into the 4 and then connect up 2 drives as
they are in the 5 or 20. I've done this several times myself. It would
be really nice if you could then use the 4's stock mounting location to
mount an additional drive, but unfortunately both that drive as well as
the lower drive on the SCSI backplane are both hardwired to ID3, so
it's an either / or proposition.
