I have a great paper from Gordon Bell (@ Microsoft Research now) on his
efforts to construct a personal server for all his output and collected
info... His calculations were intersting (ripping MP3s, storing his
writings, clippings/articles, etc.) all quite reasonable for a
career...

Have you looked into the HP Digital Sender - Paper stacked in the
hopper is scanned, wrapped into a PDF file and emailed to your desired
destination? (Think of it as a Fax machine with a 10/100 MB/Sec
Ethernet port instead of a phone jack)...
