I can affect the policies of my govenment the same way 
the average follower of Islam can affect these 
extremists.  Very little or no effect.  The U.S. 
government has done some things that I'm not happy about 
like giving more to our potential enemies than potential 
and present friends.  We may have aligned ourselves more 
with certain mid-eastern countries than is wise.  
Hopefully, that will be corrected.
  
Other countries do have terrorist attacks, some, 
internal groups and some, external.  Nobody should have 
to put up with that.  Period. 

If bin Laden is responsible, I think it's not a matter 
of scaring him but freeing up a dialysis machine. 

The sanctions on Pakistan and India were to get them to 
knock it off.  We didn't want to take sides, a stance we 
should take in the middle-east more often.  BTW, their 
nukes were duds.

Desert Storm was about oil.  That really was the basis 
of our involvement in spite of what is said.  A lot of 
Americans were pissed off when they saw clips of Kuwait 
nationals partying in Egypt while we and other countries 
were slugging it out.  Of course put civilian bomb 
shelters on the top of military bases so we can be 
the "bad guys" when they get hit.  Neat trick but it 
didn't work.

Unfortunately, when the UN wants a "peace keeping force" 
(great name, huh?) in another country, we volunteer too 
much and too often.  We should not take it on ourselves 
to police the world.  

I think one problem with all of this is that if this can 
happen to the US, it can happen to anybody which 
probably scares the poop out of a lot of other countries.

These are my views and not the views of anyone else 
since I saw that bulding burning and falling apart
and kids crying becasue their parents may have been 
inside.
I understand the ideas behind Islam, I have many 
students who follow Islam.  I don't propose turning a 
country to glass, just the individuals who did this.
