I'll try that, and I'll also check for the jumpers 
on the backplane and the card positions, as suggested 
in another mail. The memory ranges should be assigned 
correctly on the cards, at least if I didn't misread 
the information in the Sun Hardware FAQ...

Well, I had no problems to compile gcc 2.7.2.3 and gcc 2.95.2 
with the 8MB configuration before... Just 2.95.x with 12MB 
breaks...

Yes, but also I'm told the generated code is somewhat better 
with more recent versions. And while some well-behaved software 
(like perl, for example) can be compiled with Sun's old cc just 
fine, some "modern" software cannot.
