Do you have a "written" guarantee that you get hired
back - probably not!.  I too have been hit upon for
"free" advice after geting shown the door - some I
gave, some I didn't.

Best intentions and ex-company loyalty have to be
moderated and carefully considered.

Remember that the sole intent of any company is to pay
a dividend to the stock owners (public) or to the
owner (private).  Employees and ex-employees are only
numbers on a spreadsheet (somebody said that here
recently).

Tactfully find out if this is a simple "yes/no"
question or does he want a detailed analysis etc.

Simple yes/no questions usually deserve the courtesy
of a simple reply.  More than that get a consulting
agreement.
