I work for an ILEC and I can assure you this is true. We long ago
abandoned DSL as a business model and are deploying our own network
backbone. Sad but what Cringley says is absolutely true. The ILECs so
badly mismanaged their networks and hedged their bets on LD and lost big
time. Now DSL is an annoyance to them. The ILECs came along and put a
huge investment into DSLAMs and over estimated the demand and the
various distance limitations restrictions and they lost big time as
well. The result? No one will be doing DSL soon (and making money at it
anyway). We still have DSLAMS and maybe based on certain situations sell
it to a customer but we don't even advertise it.
