Just 1 thing to say here...  vmware.  I use it for my compiles, partly
because I package software, and I want a clean build host, and partly
because it does a wonderful job of "niceing" things so that performance
is still reasonable.  I haven't tried it with SMP just yet, but I've
heard that it does even better on SMP boxen.
