When Real.com started up, Rob Glaser himself promised that they would make
their audio an open format.  I remember reading about it in Wired, back when
Wired was still a good magazine.

Bastiges.  Now Microsoft is going to kill them; if they had gone to some
kind of open format Microsoft would have had a harder time of it.
