I was looking at shipping an SS1000 from the US to the UK (weight is
about 110lbs btw).

FedEx and DHL quoted about $600, UPS about $300.

In the end we used American Airlines' airport-to-airport freight
service: the sender drove it to Philadelphia and I collected from
Heathrow. Cost about $80 plus some airport freight charge (around
20UKP iirc), but I had to do the customs clearance myself. I felt
that the time was well spent for the saving involved. ;)

It was also much much faster than any of the cheaper parcel service
options. (It goes out on the next scheduled flight with sufficient
baggage space.)
