[SunRescue] SS2 running headless

A few things...

1) Runnig the machine with *no* console is not a *great*
idea, but it should be OK.

2) The OpenBoot PROM needs to have input and output redirected
tot the serial port (that you are not using) - try printenv
command to see what needs to be set, using setenv _________.

3) The serial cable that you need is simply a null modem cable,
IIRC. Null modem adapters can be gotten for $5 at Radio
Shack.

4) Serial terminals can be had for between $0 and $25, and are
   worth the investment, IMHO.

5) I don't think you can plug a keyboard into a running Sun box.
IIRC if the keyboard cable is pulled from a running sun box,
the machine will drop to the OpenBoot PROM (or freeze) - Unix
boxes are not amused with loosing their console.

HTH,

Ken

Subject: [SunRescue] SS2 running headless

My SS2 currently refuses to boot without the keyboard and
monitor attached.
I now want to run it headless. Can someone tell me what needs
prodding to
get this sorted?

Unfortunately, I don't have the weird cable I need for the
serial port, but
in any case, if anything goes wrong I can just attach a keyboard
and monitor
easily, as this is a home box, not stuck in the depths of a
rack.
