.45 is nice because even at 650 fps, a 210gr full jacketed round still packs 
that good punch.  (why 650fps? it's subsonic - easy to suppress)  Standard 
military ball is 185gr or 210gr at about 850fps.

another good thing about the .45 compared to 9mm/.38/.357 is that your 
average 165gr 1300fps .357 goes _through_ the target, meaning that it carries 
much of it's energy with it, as opposed to the .45's tendency to stay _in_ 
the target, not only expending all of it's energy right where you want it, 
but lessening hazard to whatever's on the other side.
